Gemstone Dice

Spotlight: Gemstone Dice Collection

At Dark Elf Dice, we strive to offer a huge selection of gaming dice for every budget. In fact, our extensive collection of tabletop roleplaying dice in different price ranges is one of the many things that, in my opinion, makes Dark Elf Dice awesome. Since I founded the company way back in 2005, I've always made it a point to have dice for beginning players to serious collectors, and to all gamers and collectors in between.

Gemstone Dice

One of the more expensive dice collections in the store are our Gemstone dice. "Gemstone" is a unique category, and includes dice made from semi-precious stone, synthetic stone, and glass. As you can imagine, crafting dice from solid amethyst or synthetic opal takes more time than manufacturing dice made from acrylic plastic or resin. When you add the cost of materials to the extended time it takes to make the dice, you end up with an expensive set of dice.

Just how expensive?

Well, despite the increased cost we really try to keep the Gemstone dice as affordable as possible. Currently, the majority of sets are available for $44.00 USD. From there, the price increases from $55.00 and up. The most expensive Gemstone dice set is at $100.00 (Dichroic Rainbow Glass, I'm looking at you!).

Gemstone Dice Rainbow Dichroic

Absolutely Gorgeous

Even at $44.00, I realize that a set of Gemstone dice falls outside the budget of many gamers and casual players. That being said, if you can afford a set of these dice you're in for a real treat. We currently carry 48 Gemstone dice sets, and each and every one is gorgeous.

Gemstone Dice Bloodstone

I'm a bit of a rock hound, and I'm personally drawn to the natural stone sets (Bloodstone, Natural Fluorite, and Snowflake Obsidian are personal faves). Although I'm a rock fan, I'm absolutely captivated by the synthetic Cat's Eye sets (blue is my favorite). Everyone has their own preferences, but one of the things that makes the Gemstone collection fun is the number of dice, materials, and colors available. For premium dice, there is a lot to choose from and, we truly have dice available for all tastes.

Gemstone Dice Natural Fluorite

Are The Dice Durable?

One Gemstone dice question I get asked from time-to-time is in regards to durability. Are the dice fragile? Will they break?

In Case You Missed It: The New Warlock Dice Will Put A Spell On You

A few things to consider. Gemstone dice are made from a variety of materials (as mentioned previously). The dice are extremely well-made and are intended to be used for normal game play. That said, the dice are different from plastic or metal dice, and need a little extra love on game night.

Gemstone Dice Snowflake Obsidian

Gemstone dice are precious and should be cared for accordingly. For instance, you would never want to store a set of glass dice in a bag where they rattle around or bang into each other when you roll them. Gemstone dice will last a lifetime if properly cared for. It's recommended that:

  • Between game sessions, you store the dice in the protective case that's included with each set.
  • You only roll the dice on a soft surface (a dice tray, game mat, etc.).
Gemstone Dice Cat's Eye

Final Thoughts

Make sure to take a look at our Gemstone dice and let me know your favorites. Even though our collection is extensive, we hope to add more Gemstone dice to the store in the upcoming months. You can never have enough dice :)

That's it for now, fellow travelers! Keep rolling nat 20s and always live life to the fullest, never forgetting friends, family, and neighbors. Life is good, and you are special -- you have the unique power to make this world such an amazing place. Happy adventuring!

New Warlock Dice

The New Warlock Dice Will Put A Spell On You

At Dark Elf Dice, we pride ourselves on carrying one of the world's largest, and best collections of roleplaying game dice for collectors and TTRPG players and game masters. As such, we're continually adding new products to our ever growing catalog. There are so many new dice coming out this summer we can barely keep up!

The New Warlock Dice

One of the early releases this season are the new Warlock dice. Two new additions are joining our ever popular Chain Lightning and Blood Rage dice sets -- the Dark Foresight and (one of my personal favorites) Crown of Madness.

Warlock dice feature a spell-like, cracked pattern design resembling a pure energy/ electric charge. The dice are cast in solid metal for a durable, nice and heavy feel and the cracks and numbers are filled with a colorful enamel paint. The end result is a unique dice set just bursting with character.

Warlock Dice 2Warlock Dice: Crown of Madness

Putting A Spell On You

As you can imagine, being the founder of Dark Elf Dice is a lot of fun. Not only do I get to meet fellow gamers and collectors from across the globe, I get to bring new dice to market with the help of my family and production partners. When I reviewed the first Warlock dice prototype, and was blown away by how different the dice are. There's been a lot of technological advancements in the dice making biz over the last decade, and we keep pushing the boundaries in what's possible to create. A cracked pattern design wouldn't have been possible back in the day.

In Case You Missed It: Looking Back At The Dragon Issue 1

During my initial review, I was also impressed at how Warlock dice could fill a niche. A lot of the metal dice we sell are geared towards melee character classes. This makes a lot of sense if you think about it -- nice heavy dice that roll like thunder just scream fighter or barbarian (our Bersker metal line is a perfect example). With Warlock dice however, we can offer metal dice for spellcasters. This is awesome for players and game masters who enjoy matching up dice with their character builds. Nothing says you can't use Warlock dice for a tank Barbarian of course, but the dice were designed with magic-users in mind.

Warlock Dice 4Warlock Dice: Blood Rage

Final Thoughts

So that's it for this week fellow travelers :) I hope you like our new Warlock dice as much as I do. Please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the Comment section below, and never forget that you're special and have the power and privilege to make this world a better place. You have been, and will always be amazing. Keep rolling nat 20s each and every day!

Sharp Edge Inclusion Dice Blog Post

It's All About Sharp Edge Inclusion Dice

I've been in the dice and gaming business for years, but every now and then a new innovation comes along that knocks me and my pointy wizard hat to the floor. First it was metal dice, then layered dice -- commonplace enough now, but only made possible by creative manufacturing techniques that were new back in the day. In the dice biz, things progress rapidly and the latest innovation making its debut are inclusion dice -- Sharp Edge Inclusion dice to be more exact.

Sharp Edge Inclusion Dice

So what exactly are Sharp Edge Inclusion dice, and what makes them so special? Well, there are a number of things that makes these dice extraordinary, but for me two things stand out:

  • First and foremost is just how absolutely breathtakingly beautiful they are. At Dark Elf Dice, we pride ourselves on carrying one of the largest selections of dice on the internet, and there are many beautiful dice in our ever growing catalog. Sharp Edge Inclusion dice though are something extra special -- these are dice with a beauty factor +10. Crafted with pure resin and filled with a holographic foil "inclusion", these dice capture the light in a remarkable way. Just sitting on the game table they seem to have an inner fire and a life of their own. Amazing!
  • Secondly, Sharp Edge Inclusion dice are handcrafted in small batches, each set being hand-poured. The molds used to make these dice are slightly larger than a standard set (makes it easier to add the inclusions). Once the resin cures, the dice are washed and finished by hand. The dice aren't tumbled like acrylic and most resin sets (resulting in rounded corners) so the dice retain their sharp points and edges. Though the edges are sharp, the face of each die is glassy-smooth with an almost gem-like feel.
Making Sharp Edge Inclusion Dice

Sharp Edge Inclusion dice: lovingly made by hand!

Small Batches

As you can imagine, making Sharp Edge Inclusion dice is a time intensive process, and we just can't keep the numbers in stock that we'd like to. By their very nature, Sharp Edge Inclusion dice are a boutique product made in much smaller batches than mass produced dice. While this in turn adds to the specialness of the dice, it will result in dice going out of stock fairly frequently. In fact, we sold out of the Dark Adaptation color within a few days of its initial release. More are coming, but it takes time and the manufacturing process really can't be rushed.

Final Thoughts

So how about it fellow travelers? What do you think about our Sharp Edge Inclusion dice? I've posted photos below of two of the other colors we currently have available: Blood and Ice and Polar Vortex. The dice are beautiful and we hope to have even more colors in stock shortly.

Stay tuned, and here's hoping that all of you have an amazing week with many opportunities for gaming and camaraderie! Always remember that life is special -- that you're special -- and that you have the ability to touch people's lives in so many important ways, and the power to make this world a better place. Happy adventuring!

d100 Dice

D100 Metal Dice Are Monster Big Fun

I've always been fascinated with metal dice. I suppose I just love the way they look and the weighty feel of the dice in my hand. Back in the old days (1980's, I'm looking at you!), we didn't have a lot of options when it came to game dice, and it'd take an entire generation until metal dice became readily available for the tabletop.

D100 Monster Metal Dice

So this brings me to this week's new product blog post where I discuss the newest addition to the Dark Elf Dice catalog: D100 Monster Metal Dice. In regards to these one hundred-sided dice, all I can say is "Whoa!" These d100s are freaky huge and each one weighs 14.8 ounces -- that's almost one pound of solid metal.

When I saw the d100 prototypes in person, and was able to handle the dice for the first time, I honestly laughed out loud. I've been involved in the dice business for years, but I'd never seen anything quite so massive. The dice are flat-out gorgeous, but what struck me was how heavy they were -- 3X heavier than our Giant D20 Kickstarter dice. Seriously, these metal d100 dice should not be rolled on a glass tabletop or dropped on your foot. Doing so will give a new meaning to "critical hit."

d100 Dice Metal Rainbow

Are D100 Dice Even Practical?

For collectors, Monster Metal d100 dice meet all the criteria for coolness: they're big, beautiful, and look absolutely stunning on a display shelf or desktop. For gamers though, are these one hundred-sided dice even practical for use in a tabletop campaign?

In Case You Missed It: Unicorn Dice Have A Special Kind Of Magic

Before I say anything else, let me clarify that gamers don't need d100 dice to play D&D, Pathfinder, or your tabletop roleplaying game of choice. If you need to generate a random number between 1 and 100, a traditional RPG dice set has a ten and a percentile die to do the dirty work for you. That said, if you're looking for something completely different (and want a "Wow!" factor on game night), bring out one of these bad boys every time a player needs to make a roll on a critical hit or fumble chart. Rolling almost one pound of metal to determine a character's fate? Yeah, it's going to be epic :)

Final Thoughts

Longtime fans of Dark Elf Dice may have noticed that we've been launching a lot of new products lately. We actually have a huge backlog of dice and accessories just waiting to hit the website. The Monster Metal d100 dice are just the beginning of this month's new releases, so stay tuned for more awesome stuff.

Until next time fellow travelers! Keep gaming and keep having fun.

Shadowstone Abyss Dice Release

Shadowstone Abyss Dice Are Here

Yesterday, we added a new set to the Shadowstone dice collection -- Shadowstone Abyss. This new dice set has the hallmark, otherworldly color combinations as the other dice in the series, but with an added twist.

Shadowstone Abyss Dice

Shadowstone Abyss dice feature a mixture of green and purple with a soft infusion of iridescent glitter. The end result is a gorgeous, shimmering color. If you're looking to match dice with a character class, these are amazing dice for a wizard, sorcerer, or any magic-based character in Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and other fantasy tabletop RPGs.

Iridescent Glitter

It's no wonder that iridescent glitter is popular with gamers and collectors alike. First used in Chessex Borealis dice and the since retired Crystal Caste Moonstone dice (we miss you!), iridescent glitter gives dice like the Shadowstone Abyss an ethereal sheen that shifts and intensifies in the light. Glitter isn't appropriate for all dice mind you, but when used properly with the correct color base the dice have a seemingly added energy that adds to the fun of any game night.

Until next time fellow travelers! Dark Elf Dice is full of surprises and we'll be adding many more dice sets in the coming months, so stay tuned.

Watermelon Dice Are In Season

Watermelon Dice Are In Season

One of the sweetest dice sets we carry is back! Even though it's now autumn and the temperatures are starting to fall here in Wisconsin, Watermelon dice are still in season.

Watermelon Dice

Since their initial launch earlier this summer, Watermelon dice have proven to be a customer favorite. As part of the Forbidden Fruit collection, the dice fit in perfectly with the popular Passion Fruit and Kiwi dice we sell. Alas, the dice quickly sold out, but thankfully we just received a big shipment.

Watermelon dice are made from three color layers to look like their namesake. The green and off-white layers represent the rind, while the semi-translucent red mimics the fruit. The dice even have little black specks that look like watermelon seeds. To top it off, complimentary gold numbers complete the look. As a whole, the dice give gamers something truly different for game night.

Watermelon Dice

Final Thoughts

Until next time fellow travelers! If you're interested learning more about Watermelon dice be sure to visit the Dark Elf Dice store listing here or contact us if you have any questions.

geeky d20 wedding

A Geeky d20 Wedding

The wedding season is upon us! The weather is warm, the roses are in bloom, and there's so much romance in the air that it makes the poets weep with joy. Is it any wonder that this is the most popular time of the year to get married?

Geeky d20 Wedding

Still, even though weddings are popular now, gamers like to do things a little differently than most (hey, no one ever accuses us of being ordinary!).

One of the trends we've seen through the years is the rise of the geeky d20 wedding. Instead of the traditional clanging of glasses at the wedding reception (you know, where guests CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! their glasses with knives and forks to get the newlyweds to kiss), couples are substituting a giant inflatable d20 for the ritual.

geeky d20 wedding

A Happy Surprise

When we first started selling the inflatable d20's here at Dark Elf Dice, we just assumed that people wanted to use the giant dice at outdoor events or pool parties. They're more or less awesome, geeky beach balls and they seemed a natural fit for batting around on the sand or rolling across the lawn at a neighbor's BBQ.

It wasn't long however that customers started writing and telling us how they were going to use the inflatable d20s at their wedding reception. How cool was that! We're passionate about the dice and miniatures we sell, and it made all of us happy to think that a product we offer was being used in one of the most important celebrations in a couple's life.

A New Tradition

Basically, this is how the geeky wedding works: instead of guests clanging glasses, they take turns rolling the inflatable d20. On a successful roll between 11 and 20 (a hit!), the newlyweds kiss, and on a failed roll between 1 and 10 (a miss!) the guests in attendance have to kiss their partners. We've heard of variations of this new tradition, but this is the gist of the geeky d20 wedding.

inflatable d20 wedding

Final Thoughts

One of the great things about gaming is how the hobby brings people together. Gaming events are times of happiness and laughter, and it only seems natural that the inflatable d20 would take a life of its own and be used in geeky weddings.

Have you used an inflatable d20 at your wedding reception, or do you know someone who has? We'd love to hear your story! Please feel free to share your experience in the comments section below.

Until next time fellow travelers! If you're one of the lucky ones getting married this month I congratulate you. You're embarking on one of the greatest adventures this life has to offer, and you'll be sharing this special time with your best friend in all the multiverse. Happy adventuring!

Blended Dice

The Blended Dice Collection Keeps On Growing

At Dark Elf Dice, we're always adding new dice to our impressive catalog, and some of the newest dice launched were Blended dice -- polyhedral dice in unusual two-color mixes.

New Blended Dice

Since we started carrying Blended dice late last year, the collection has steadily grown. The three newest dice sets came out last week, and are sure to offer something special for gamers and collectors.

The new Blended dice include Glamour Spell, Vorpal Blade, and Wild Magic (you can view these and other Blended dice here).

Blended dice Glamour SpellGlamour Spell dice are an unusual mixture of yellow and rose -- two of the rarer colors on the market today. The end result is a beautiful mix that appears soft and velvety. These dice are a great choice for Bards and spell casters.

Vorpal Blade dice

Vorpal Blade dice feature a mix of purple and green. Unlike other purple/green mixes we sell, these Blended dice have a soft, metallic sheen. Combined with bright gold numbering, Vorpal Blade dice evoke the mystery of magical weapons.

Wild Magic dice

Rounding out the newest Blended dice in our collection is my personal favorite, Wild Magic dice. A purple and red mixture is the hallmark of Wild Magic. Where the two colors blend together, an almost coppery-hue is created. Again, these are awesome dice for spell casters -- especially sorcerers of any alignment.

Final Thoughts

If you enjoy our newest Blended dice, be sure to check back often! As always, we'll be launching new dice sets over the coming months.

Until next time, fellow travelers! Take time to enjoy the precious gift of life, and have fun gaming :)
