All About RPG Miniatures
Beyond dice sets, the game accessories best associated with Dungeons and Dragons and other roleplaying games are RPG miniatures. These tabletop models have been around since the inception of DnD. Once made from lead, today’s minis are cast in incredible detail from lead-free pewter and plastic.
Interestingly enough, Dungeons & Dragons came about because of miniatures – or miniature wargaming to be exact. Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, the game's creators, created a fantasy rules system that allowed players to create characters -- as opposed to military units. The birth of D&D was the beginning of tabletop RPG games.
I started collecting and painting miniatures when I began playing DnD in the 1980's. It's still a hobby I love to this very day, and my collection continues to grow. I'm an old school gamer and I still prefer metal miniatures over plastic, but with the advent of CAD sculpting and modern casting methods, I find myself attracted more and more to plastic and polystyrene models.
It's an exciting time to be an RPG miniatures collector, and at Dark Elf Dice we carry an awesome selection of minis for your games. Whether you're looking for a model to represent your character, or monsters for your dungeons, we have a great selection and great prices. I invite you to browse our shop. You can find minis by character class and by race. We also carry a wide variety of paints and brushes so you can get your miniatures looking their best and ready for your greatest adventures.
Wishing you all the best!
RPG Miniatures FAQ
What are RPG miniatures?
RPG miniatures are small models used for tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. Also known as "minis" or "figures," players use miniatures to represent characters and monsters during a game session.
Besides game use, miniatures are collected and painted by hobbyists worldwide -- both casually and competitively in contests such as the Golden Demon.
What are RPG miniatures made from?
RPG miniatures are made from a variety of materials, including lead-free pewter, resin, plastic, and polystyrene.
Note: during the golden age of tabletop roleplaying in the 80's, minis were cast from lead (Pb). Lead is an extremely dangerous metal if ingested and can cause poisoning. Lead is soft, relatively inexpensive, and easy to work with. The art of making lead figures and soldiers goes back hundreds of years, but today's miniatures are lead-free.
Are lead RPG miniatures safe?
As mentioned previously, lead (Pb) is extremely dangerous if ingested -- especially for small children. Old lead miniatures from the 1980s and earlier need to be handled with care.
1) Avoid sanding lead miniatures and beware of trimming mold lines or doing modifications that may result in shavings or dust. These micro-particles are extremely dangerous, easy to ingest, and will contaminate a workspace.
2) Wash your hands after handling lead miniatures that haven't been primed or painted.
3) Never let children play with lead miniatures (actually, any miniatures for that matter) -- they are not toys.
4) Prime and paint your lead miniatures. This will encapsulate the metal and make the models safer to handle.
Do RPG miniatures need to be assembled?
The majority of the minis we sell on Dark Elf Dice need some assembly and prep work before they can be painted. Miniatures are models after all and need to be put together. Honestly, this is part of the fun!

I'm always looking for interesting or funky new dice colors and variations to play with. These stripey "artisan" dice looked cool in the picture, and in person they look phenomenal! The ribbons of color aren't just different hues, but different materials too - some glittery, some pearlescent. Has the look of an artist's brush after lots of paint went on. Love it.
I also picked up a set that looked like ketchup and mustard swirled together. Gross and awesome.
Die is beautiful! D.M. approved
There is nothing better than sitting down and painting mini’s right out of the package with your kids. No clean up on any of the mini’s ordered.
These liquid core dice are simply stunning! A real critical success for gifting! The colours are really nice and the shimmer adds the perfect amount of magic to every roll (now I can still be happy rolling a natural 1).
Magma Caster is just perfect for the pyro wizard casting Fireball at every encounter, the colour and shimmer really sell the destructive fiery spell at the gaming table.
Stealthy Stealth is being used by our resident rogue and roll beautifully for pickpocketing and, of course the all important stealth rolls. Beautifully balanced they allow my player to just stealth into a cloud of glittery darkness!!
Arrived in three days, just in time for game. I love it!
I ordered this advent calendar on Black Friday. There was a special where you could put in a code to receive a free dice ornament if you ordered that day, but I forgot to put in the code. I emailed Dark Elf Dice right away asking if there was anything they could do, and they responded very quickly and kindly added the offer to my order. The person I purchased the calendar for loved both the calendar itself as well as the special ornament! Great gift for D&D fans and the customer service was amazing!
The Druidic Healing blue set look fantastic. Shipping was also quick. Thank you.
They look really well made and i love the effect of the liquid core
I love the screen for several reasons!
It's clearly marked in the bottom left corner of each paper which side should show if you're DMing for D&D or Pathfinder, and just the fact that you have both options like that is great!
It's easy to look up conditions etc, and as long as you have a dryerase marker or something similar, you can make parties, enemies, etc and have their stats easily avaliable to you.
The gems on the player-facing side of the are super neat, and all in all it's a positively unique DM-screen.
Very cool dice! Good weight. Fast shipping! Would recommend!
Exactly what I expected. Beautiful product!
Thank you! The product looks great
Magic Potion Dice Sets (Choose Your Color) | Shimmering Liquid Core Dice
My teenage son loves this calendar. He can’t wait to open each day to see which dice appears. Also the flap comments are amusing.
Comes in a cute color-coordinated bag. Nice and heavy.
