My Introduction To Ceramic Dice
A number of years ago (I can't exactly remember when -- time and space seem to meld and twist and blend into each other the older you get), I was approached by Crit Hit Ceramics asking if I'd like to sell their ceramic dice. At that time, Dark Elf Dice was still one of the oldest, most dedicated D&D dice shops on the internet, but I had never heard of ceramic dice.
OK -- like many of you my first thought was "No way. Ceramic dice can't possibly be used for tabletop roleplaying games. Ceramic is too fragile and will break too easily." After looking at the pictures Crit Hit sent me, my second thought was "Wow! these dice are absolutely gorgeous!"
Thankfully, I was wrong in my initial assumption, because ceramic can be used for making game dice (which is great because the dice are beautiful!). Through much trial and error, Crit Hit Ceramics developed an exciting technique to make strong, durable dice from mid-fire clay (I won't reveal any of the company's trade secrets but they've invested a lot money and time in advanced and bespoke equipment to make these amazing dice).
- The ceramic dice are all handcrafted in the United States
- Each die is carefully weighed for consistency and pressed, cleaned and numbered by hand
- The clay is fired for approximately 12 hours at 2200° Fahrenheit to give the dice toughness and strength.
Despite their toughness, ceramic dice should still be treated with the respect and care of all precious things. If the dice are abused they can chip or crack, so it's best to make your rolls on a dice tray or soft surface (the same advice I give regarding gemstone or glass dice).
We carry a good selection of Crit Hit's dice and will be adding more colors as they're available, including an exclusive set made just for Dark Elf Dice to celebrate our 20th anniversary. These dice are awesome and will be revealed as soon as possible. Stay tuned :)

Ceramic Dice FAQ
What are Ceramic dice?
Ceramic dice are dice made from mid-fire clay. This material (unique for dice manufacturing) harkens back to an earlier age before plastics and metal.
Are Ceramic dice durable?
Due to the manufacturing process, ceramic dice are strong and durable. Fired for 12 hours at 2200° Fahrenheit gives the dice the necessary toughness to be used for tabletop roleplaying games. That said, ceramic dice should be cared for and rolled on a dice tray or soft surface.
Are Ceramic dice balanced and fair?
Ceramic dice are balanced and fair and are perfectly suitable for casual games of Dungeons & Dragons and other tabletop roleplaying games. Each die is carefully weighed on a gram scale for consistency/center mass and is pressed into a special mold utilizing lines of symmetry.
Are Ceramic dice expensive?
Due to their handcrafted nature, Ceramic dice are more expensive than mass produced resin or acrylic dice. Each dice set takes approximately 3-4 man hours to make.
Where are Ceramic dice manufactured?
The Crit Hit Ceramic dice we sell are all handmade in the United States and come from the great state of Indiana.
