What are d100 dice used for?

D100 dice will generate a random number between 1 and 100, and are used in tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons. One-hundred sided dice will never be utilized as much as the ubiquitous d20, due to a game's mechanics, but these dice still find uses during a game session.

D100 dice are mostly used for:

1) Generating a percentage. During a game, some Dungeon Masters will assign a percent fail/success chance in lieu of a d20 difficulty check (DC). For example, a Dungeon Master might determine that a player has a 30% chance to discover a treasure map hidden in a pile of books. The player rolls a d100, and as long as the randomly generated number is 30 or less they're successful and the once hidden map is found. Success!

2) Generating a number to determine a result on a table or list. Roleplaying games like DnD are known for tables and lists -- many of which are based on 100 different results. Treasure lists, random encounters, and critical hit and fumble tables are three such examples. A Dungeon Master or player rolls the d100 to generate a random number, matches it to the list, and bingo! You have a result.

How do you roll a d100?

A d100 is rolled like other dice, but there are few things to keep in mind:

1) Due to the number of faces on 100-sided dice, a d100 will roll longer than a d20, d12, etc. Because these big dice tumble longer before a number is generated, it's important to have space to safely make the roll. It doesn't take much for a rolled d100 to go wild and start knocking over RPG miniatures, half-empty soda cans, and whatever else you have organized on the game table. A dice tray or game mat is beneficial for a d100 roll.

2) Due to the weight of a d100 (especially our Monster Metal dice that weigh almost 1 pound!), it's important to roll the dice safely to avoid damaging a table, etc. A dice tray or game mat will help protect a playing surface when heavy dice are rolled.

How do you read a d100?

A d100 is read just like the majority of polyhedral dice. The generated number appears on the top face. Once the roll has stopped, you look straight down on the d100 and read the topmost number.
