All About D20 Dice
If you had to pick one, universally recognized symbol to represent tabletop roleplaying games, you’d be hard pressed to find anything better (or more well loved) than the d20. The queen of all polyhedral dice, the twenty-sider is tops when it comes to RPG games. In fact, Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, and a host of other games are based on d20 mechanics. A randomly generated number between one and twenty is required for rolls-to-hit, saving throws, ability checks, and more. The tabletop games that we know so well today would look far different without twenty-sided dice.
Fun fact: although the association between D20 dice and RPG games is forever-linked, twenty-sided dice actually go back much further in our history -- as early as the 2nd century BC. Currently, a d20 made of sepentinite from the Ptolemaic period is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The d20 is remarkably preserved for its age, and would fit right in with a dice goblin’s horde of today. Historians believe ancient dice were used for divination and of course gaming. Who knows? Perhaps one of our ancestors from two thousand years ago rolled one of these bad boys to make a Wisdom saving throw.

What shape is a d20?
A d20 is an icosahedron -- a solid with twenty plane faces. This twenty-sided shape is awesome for randomly generating numbers between 1 and 20 and was first used for tabletop roleplaying games with the release of Dungeons and Dragons.
What sizes do d20 dice come in?
The most common d20 size is 16mm (also known as standard size). We also carry large twenty-sided dice in our shop -- everything from our Kickstarter 33mm d20s upwards to the massive 54mm and 55mm dice showcased in our d20 collection.
